University of California, Berkeley
Berkeley Nanosciences and Nanoengineering Institute
Assistant Professor Position in Nanoscale Science and Engineering

The University of California, Berkeley solicits applications for a tenure track position of Assistant Professor beginning in the fall of 2014.  Creative and energetic candidates who have demonstrated extraordinary accomplishment and promise in research and teaching are specifically sought in fields at the intersection of nanoscience/nanotechnology and the biological sciences, particularly (but not exclusively) in neuroscience.  Examples include but are not limited to cellular and molecular imaging, nanostructured materials for probing and manipulating neural networks, wireless communication in sensor applications, and synthesis, characterization, and application of low dimensional materials. Applications toward studies of neural systems are particularly encouraged.

This faculty search will be conducted by the Berkeley Nanosciences and Nanoengineering Institute (nano.berkeley.edu), with participation from the Helen Wills Neuroscience Institute (neuroscience.berkeley.edu), and departments representing the physical, biological, computing, and engineering sciences.  The successful candidate will have the potential to interact with scientists and engineers across a wide spectrum of disciplines, and to help develop new interdisciplinary initiatives in nanoscale science and engineering.  An appointment will be made in a home academic department appropriate to the successful candidate’s research and teaching interests.

At the time of application the candidate must demonstrate a record of substantial research accomplishment as embodied by publication of original research in established, peer-reviewed journal(s) of the candidate's field of study.  A Ph.D. in chemistry, physics, bioengineering, or a related field is required by the start date. Apply using the website below. You will submit a complete Curriculum Vitae, a selection (two to five) of publication reprints or preprints in press, a brief statement of future research plans and teaching interests, and the contact information for at least three references. All letters will be treated as confidential per University of California policy and CA state law. Please refer potential referees, including when letters are provided via a third party (i.e., dossier service or career center), to the UC Berkeley statement of confidentiality (http://apo.chance.berkeley.edu/evalltr.html) prior to submitting their letters. Questions can be directed to nanoinstitute@lists.berkeley.edu or 510-643-6681.

Applications, including references, must be completed by December 20, 2013.  Application review will begin November 20, 2013. BNNI has an interest in candidates who will contribute to diversity and equal opportunity in higher education through their teaching, research, and service.  We care about the family needs of faculty; information on relocation to Berkeley can be found at calcierge.berkeley.edu  The University is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer.

Previous searches by the BNNI have resulted in the successful recruitment of Junqiao Wu , Seung-Wuk Lee , Gerard Marriott , and Hartmut Haeffner .
